Acetone: all you should to know

Whether you are using acetone to do something as simple as remove your nail polish, or something more extreme like using it to clean up the aftermath of an oil spill, there is almost no industry that couldn’t benefit from the use of this versatile solvent. Acetone is an organic, non-toxic product making it safe to use in personal care, cleaning of animals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals. This solvent is multifaceted and can be used in many areas to clean, thin, and degrease, but what is acetone made of?

What is Acetone Made of and What is it Used For?
Acetone is a naturally occurring compound also known as propanone. Composed of the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen, acetone presents as a clear liquid that is highly flammable and often used as cleaner in industrial settings.

What are the main health hazards associated with inhalation of acetone?
noticeable
irritation occurs
some people report headaches
dizziness
fatigue

Inhalation of concentrations above 2000 ppm can cause dizziness, a feeling of intoxication, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting. Exposure to an extremely high concentration (over 10 000 ppm) can cause loss of consciousness.

Acetone is dangerous for the eyes?
A concentration of about 500 ppm of acetone vapor causes mild irritation. At 1000 ppm, the irritation is very noticeable. According to information gathered in animals and humans (the latter is limited), acetone liquid is a severe irritant. In three humans, acetone caused corneal injury, which healed completely in 48 hours. In one case, unusually, liquid acetone remained in direct contact with the eye for a long time. Under these conditions, the eye has sustained permanent injuries, including corneal clouding.
Acetone is does it cause cancer?
No information has been gathered in humans about it. Information found in animals suggests that acetone is not carcinogenic.

Acetone did cause any problems with my reproductive system?
No definite conclusion can be drawn. The study of 25 men exposed to styrene and acetone during the manufacture of reinforced plastics show, compared to controls, an increased percentage of sperm whose head had an abnormal shape. The study of 891 women who work or have worked in the semiconductor industry has shown an increased risk of miscarriage in these workers. Seven chemicals, including acetone, were strongly associated with increased risk of miscarriage.

No conclusions can be drawn from these two studies, given such factors as the small number of workers studied and concomitant exposure to other potentially harmful chemicals. There is insufficient information to justify the assessment in a study conducted in Russia reports increased complications during pregnancy and reduced birth weight in children of mothers exposed to acetone. A study in animals showed sperm effects along kidney damage.

Acetone is she on the fetus / unborn baby?No information about it in humans. The information collected in animals suggests that acetone has such effects in case of maternal toxicity.

Is there any possibility of accumulation of acetone in the body?
Acetone is a normal byproduct of metabolism in mammals and, as such, it is found in almost all organs and tissues and blood. Acetone can enter the body through inhalation, ingestion or skin contact. There are a number of metabolic pathways of compounds in the acetone used in the manufacture of glucose and other metabolic intermediates by the body, with production of carbon dioxide. Acetone is excreted either unchanged or after metabolism in the form of mainly carbon dioxide.

It is excreted primarily in
expired air and very little in the urine. Excretion by respiration is complete within twenty hours after inhalation. The amount of acetone excreted intact in urine increases with the concentration and duration of exposure and exercise performed during exposure.

Cons
Harsh and very drying to nails, cuticles and skin. Women with nails that are dry or splitting should avoid using.

How do to use acetone safety?
Avoid contact with eyes
skin and clothing
Keep container tightly closed when not in use
Storage should be cool
well ventilated away from sources of ignition or heat

Apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly to each cuticle and the surrounding skin.

This will help protect your skin from the acetone
Cut the cotton balls or strip to the size of each nail.
Using cotton that is about the same size as each nail reduces your risk of getting acetone on your skin. When acetone sits on your skin, it can irritate and damage your skin.

As a general rule: The nails on your pinkie fingers (5th finger) or little toes need about ¼ of a cotton ball. You can cover each of the other nails with ½ of a cotton ball.

Soak each piece of cut cotton in acetone.
Place each piece of soaked cotton on top of the nail that it was cut to fit, and wrap the nail with plastic food wrap. You want a tight seal. Avoid wrapping your nails so tightly that you cut off your circulation.

Leave the plastic wrap on for 10 minutes. When you remove the plastic wrap, most or all of the gel nail polish should be gone.

Remove any remaining gel nail polish with a washcloth that you’ve just run under warm water. Use the wet washcloth to gently rub off any remaining polish. Take care to rub only the nail and avoid rubbing the surrounding skin.

Wash your hands or feet with a gentle soap and water to remove the acetone. If you have a fragrance-free soap, use it. Any mild soap will help you avoid irritating your skin
Gently rub petroleum jelly into your cuticles and the skin around your nails every day for seven days. This will help to reduce any irritation caused by the acetone.
